As far as photographers go, he gets along with most of them, but "the thing that sucks most is when another photographer derails you." However, the competition is something that helps drive Walter to do his best on all his work. One of the people he most looks up to is a local competitor at his level named Andy Mcfarland. They both do great work, but they're always very polite to each other and neither are the backstabbing type. He also greatly looks up to Robert Kenndy, who does magazines such as American Curves, Muscle Mag, Oxygen, and REPS. He appreciates Kennedy for his general inspiration and everything he's done for Walter. Walter said, "If it wasn't for him, I never would have kept going."
When I asked him which girl he's most liked shooting, he quickly caught himself and said that after his wife, it would have to be Denise Worth. He said that Denise has been with him almost from the beginning, she's a great poser, he was the first to get her published, and even though she didn't sign a contract, she pretty much stays with just him. Next, I asked him who he would most like to shoot in the future, and he told me CJ Gibson because he just shot her sister and would love to shoot her next.
As far as Walt's style goes, I'm pretty sure the only word to describe it is perfect. From the angles to the posing to the after work, everything about his photos are flawless. By making sure his models are comfortable, he is able to bring out their personality in his work. Then, of course after the modeling process, it's time for the photoshopping; however, Ostarly is very careful never to go overboard. He once thought about taking a photoshop class, but he decided against it because he wanted to keep an original style. Must of been a good decision because the work he does is outstanding!
One of Walter's ultimate goals is to someday take pictures for Sports Illustrated, much like Walter Iooss Jr. There is no doubt in my mind that he will get there. Walter Ostarly is a great photographer and person. He told me that he just wants to feel like he's made a difference in peoples' lives, and he definitely has! How could he not when he lives by the statement "It's great to be different, but better to make a difference."
