"I’ve really enjoyed the people I’ve met by doing photography," said Photographer Shaan Kokin, "I also love meeting people who are photo enthusiasts. We really share a common bond because they understand the hard work and skill involved that others might not."

In his years of photography, Shaan has worked with some of the top make-up artists, photographers, celebrities, and millionaires. But don't jump to conclusions! Shaan Kokin is not one to be blinded by the bright lights of Hollywood. "This might not be the case for all, but it seems to me that with those types, if you don’t have something huge to offer them, they aren’t very interested in getting to know you," Shaan said.

Shaan Kokin PhotographyShaan grew up and continues to live in Los Angeles; however, he longs to return to live in beautiful Santa Barbara, which he claims has a small town atmosphere with the culture and friendliness that L.A. lacks. Shaan got into photography when he realized Shaan Kokin Photographyhe wanted to do something creative, and without immense math or science skills, he knew he had to choose something without the tremendous responsibilities of, say, a doctor or a lawyer.

"I would say on the outside people might perceive me as that 'Cali Surfer Dude,' but on the inside I have a lot of inner turmoil and stress going on that people can't really pick up on," Shaan explained when asked to describe himself, "A lot of people think I'm shy and quiet when I first meet them because it takes me awhile to feel comfortable and be myself around someone new. I really try and not hurt peoples feelings which causes me to think too much sometimes."

"A lot of photography is really a collaborative effort that I really didn’t understand until I graduated from school."

The essential uniqueness of a photographer's work can be influenced by several factors, including the individuals that the photographer has worked with.  "So much of a good photograph depends on the stylist, wardrobe, make-up, set design, model, etc." Shaan explained, "I’ve met and worked with many great make-up artists who I have tremendous respect for such as Marty Christopher and James Lacey. I’ve also worked with Victor Sanabrais a photographer who shoots a lot of lingerie, including the Lingerie Bowl, which we shot together." Shaan also recognizes 1940's photographer George Hurrell as his greatest influence of all. George Hurrell was a photographer known for his many dramatic photos of movie starlets such as Marilyn Monroe. "He was a master of lighting and used the lighting to create these dramatic moments," Shaan said.
