Film vs. Digital

Shaan KokinFilm vs. Digital which is better? Many of you might be too young to remember that film was what everyone used before the onslaught of digital cameras. But if you really want to get good at photography I highly recommend dusting off that old film camera if you want to get serious.

Firstly, if you want to get the most out your photos I highly recommend using an SLR camera which  stands for Single Lense  Reflex. These are the big types of cameras that you can interchange lenses on and lets you see through the lense. These are different then the simple point and shoot cameras that only let you view your subjects through the small viewfinder and not through the lense. The SLR camera allows your more control on your settings and focusing.

One reason I recommend film cameras is it trains you to be more precise with your shooting. Because film and processing is more expensive you really have to get your exposure right and frame your picture nicely. Its also nice to actually deal with film to hold it and load it. It is also a magical process that when sensitized material is exposed to light an image is formed on it.

But when using film unlike digital alot more variables can cause your pictures not to come out. Film can get bad if it isn't used by a certain time, it needs to loaded properly into your camera, if exposed to light improperly it can get fogged and ruined.

Then to make things even harder proper ways of developing the film and printing must be used so you don't  ruin your image. So is film a dying art form you might be asking? It might be, many films are being discontinued and companies such as Kodak are really trying to just go digital. But many years ago when photography was discovered some people thought that paintings and drawings would die out and be replaced by photographs. But as we see now their is room for both which I think their will be room also for both film and digital.

Digital is really taking over now mainly because the quality of it has become just as good as film but digital still has a few drawbacks though not as much as film. When using digital you need to get really good at organizing your photos on your computer and have a basic understanding of Photoshop.

And things still can go wrong my friend was shooting some great shots the other day and then accidentally erased his memory card! So if you want to experiment and have the money try out some film but keep the digital camera close by so you know you got the shot for sure!
